Burlesque Princess has teamed up with the Pink Pearl Foundation to
host CAMP DIVA, a course which will be offered to female cancer
survivors and their friends and family. The class will incorporate
dance and empowerment exercises as featured in our regular programming
and also a tailored group routine specific to the participants.

Recognising the effects both physically and emotionally on not only
the diagnosed but those friends and family who provide support though
the difficult journey cancer presents, the class offers participants
the opportunity to bond while having fun releasing their inner ‘Diva’.
Camp Diva aims to empower women mental and physical health promotion
and reinforce positive self esteem.

This October, to mark the breast cancer month, Pink Pearl Foundation with her vision of reducing breast cancer in Nigeria will be flagging off four events to continue its awareness creation. The events which are PINK KITCHEN, BALL OUT, PINK RIDE & CAMP DIVA will take place on 5th-7th, 15th, 18TH-22nd and 27th-29th of October respectively. With this events, the Foundation will be creating a relaxed atmosphere where individuals as well as groups can come and have fun and at the same time be provided with basic information on breast cancer, its effects, treatments and healthy tips on how to avoid having this disease that claim the lives of women every day.

PINK KITCHEN is an open restaurant to be flanked by celebrity servers including His Excellency; the governor of Delta State; Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, Sammie Okposo, Mabel Makun, Mo’Cheddah, I Go Save, amongst others who will be actively involved for the duration of the event. This exciting event will be held at the 911 FIELD by UGBUWANGUE MARKET, NPA EXPRESS ROAD Warri Delta State @ 11am from the 5th to 7th of October. Tickets will be sold for the sum of N600.00 at Otres Fast food and at the venue. Attendees who have purchased the ticket will be served with choice food in a relaxed and entertaining atmosphere while the awareness goes on at the background with slideshows, drama presentation, music, comedy and lecture. This event is supported by Arik Air, Otres fast food, Staco Insurance, Vantgarde limited, 911, Remain blessed catering services, ICARE Foundation and Artletic works.

BALL OUT is a novelty football match between two women team to create awareness, impact knowledge and provide screening for our women. It is scheduled to hold @ the OGHARA EFE TOWNSHIP STADIUM, OGHARA DELTA STATE on October 15th @ 2pm. Her Excellency, wife of the Delta state governor will be the special guest of honour. Early that day as well, there is going to be a morning walk/rally in line with our radical campaign on the gravity of breast cancer. This event is supported by Edo State Government, Sulphur Streams, Otres fast food, Fradro limited and Stand up to cancer 9ja.

PINK RIDE holds from the 18th to 22nd of October and would cut across Edo State to Delta state. This event is in collaboration between the pink pearl foundation and the lifestyle cycling club Port-Harcourt. The cyclists will be riding through Benin-Warri-Abraka-Asaba. We expect over 100 cyclists and 500,000 spectators over the entire journey through several cities, towns and villages alongside creating awareness in our usual entertaining manner. We intend to reach a further audience of one million by post coverage of the event through television, radio and newsprint. This event is supported by St. Luke’s hospital Asaba, Artletic works, Access Bank, ICARE foundation, FRSCN, Edo State Government and Lifestyle Cycling club

Burlesque Princess are looking to expand our troop and will be holding open auditions to all interested female dancers. No burlesque experience is required but a dance or acting background is an advantage. A high level of commitment will be expected as training will be offered to all successful applicants.

We are looking for a total of 8 girls to be part of the BP family, these girls will be featured in burlesque princess events and will be become an intrinsic part of the family.

Auditions will be held at the Latin dance studios from 9am- 5pm on Friday 23rd, Saturday 24th September and Saturday 15th October, please come with a picture. We ask that all hopefuls email/call to confirm attendance and come at the time they have been scheduled to attend.

Pink Pearl Foundation

Pink Pearl Foundation (PPF) was founded in October 2007, for the sole purpose of raising awareness about breast cancer in Nigeria and has gradually grown in the past few years educating and screening women around Nigeria's rural and inner city area's.

The initiative was founded by Orode Uduaghan, whose passion to help her community gave birth to the foundation. Her zeal to make the world a better place prompted the then 18-year-old undergraduate to begin work.

"The thought of having women in Nigeria die of this disease out of ignorance gave birth this foundation. Women are a very important part of our society, and PPF believes that if you can save a woman, you can save a generation... Our goal is to leave this world a better place and the best time to start is now. No matter how little you have to offer, it might have a huge impact on the person beside you"

Pink Pearl Foundation recently introduced “PINK WEDNESDAYS”

Every Wednesday from 12-2pm PPF hold free seminar session for the first 20 women who arrive @ 5 Iyalla Street off Keffi Street Alausa Ikeja Lagos. EVERY Wednesday a Volunteer Dr would be present to teach you about breast and cervical cancer and also answer your questions and concerns.
Due to limitations these sessions can currently only accommodate a max of 20 ppl)

So we have been running for just over a year now and when I looked back at all our posts I realised that, though I was updating the information, I never properly introduced myself >Shock Horror< So I decided to put a face and a name to Burly Princess! It’s always hard writing about yourself, feels like I'm putting together a CV from scratch or a story and I’m slightly stuck after the once upon a time bit, lol...

Born Oyinda Fakeye in London where until 2008 I lived happily but with an thirst for something more, packing my bags and relocating to Lagos Nigeria, now going by the stage name Queenburly Miel (if you can say Kimberly you can pronounce this). Miel is the French word for honey, Oyinda translated into English also means honey and as a self proclaimed Afropolitan who is obsessed with the French language it was all too fitting.

Well I fell in love with Burlesque when I accompanied my cousin to a free session she had been invited to through work, sometime in 2007 (in London). We had such a good time but it wasn’t until 2008 that I took dancing a bit more seriously, mainly for my own amusement :) As a child I had taken creative dance classes and at (Nottingham) University I joined a Malaysian dance troupe (oui, tres bizare) and even performed for the High Commissioner of Malaysia (oh how I so wish I had videotaped it), music and dance have always been a passion and have figured into my professional and personal life.

My interests have always been around body image, health, femininity and feminism and I want to create a company that could embody these things and be empowering to all who come in contact with it. We have a commitment to showing positive reflections of women and their diversity encouraging women to embrace themselves in all their splendour.

I am constantly researching and developing myself as a Burlesque Performer and teacher and share the information gained with my colleagues and our students, including some of Burlsque's more obscure history. Burlesque is an interesting art form, that contrary to what most people believe, isnt solely or dominantly about peeling (stripping), it deals a lot with body politics and in its hay day raised and mocked certain societal issues of the time; there are so many stories many a woman in Nigeria could tell....

A side from BP, I work within the visual arts; curating/ producing/ programming and In 2009 I focussed on developing and promoting video art/ists in Lagos, an under-represented art form here. It was through my time spent working on the project that I developed the strength and skill I believed necessary to promote Burlesque in Nigeria. In May 2010 I started running classes at a family member’s house every Wednesday 7-8pm, it ended up being a really good time for all who came and by September 2009 we decided it was time to move into a studio, The Latin Dance Company, where we have been since.

I’m really happy with our Beginner's Burlesque and Burlesquercise classes and I am looking forward to our new classes launching after summer when we kick off a new academic year. There will also be a bigger focus on performance as we develop our troupe and partner with artists through choreography (look out for some cameos from the BP team).

As Creative Director my mind is constantly bustling with ideas and while the road has definitely not been easy, it’s fair to say I've pored my heart and soul into BP and I continue to. As we expand and go through changes I hope to be able to give more and more and open up the world to the possibilities Burlesque in Africa can bring!

Burlesque Princess Celebrates its First Year

Its crazy to think that a year ago all I had was a hope and a dream that I could some how promote, present and encourage the art form that is Burlesque. I threw in all my resources and recruited my friends and family, who have I must say, continued to support me on my journey. The road remains steep but we are blessed at what we have accomplished this past year; through classes and hen nights, performances at varied events and editorials, Burlesque Princess is clearly here for the long run!

I must , must give the biggest shout out to Adeola, who is my assistant and rock. Times when I have wanted to give up or had a crisis of faith she has stood strong! She is off to Law School very soon so I'm going to have to find a way to function without her, but glad to know she will be returning as our company Lawyer :) Wishing you all the best miha!!!

Secondly I have to thank my board; Doyin, Dayo, Morin, Sar and Wonu, how I wish every woman had a group as focussed and supportive as these ladies. They say no man is an Island, neither is a woman, so find your Diva board ladies and hold onto them tight!

T-boogie you let us hold our first class at your house and you were my star pupil, now get back to work, we have much to do! A big hug goes to our newest team member Niqua, you came at just the right time- kindred spirits always find each other! Welcome on board :)

Hi all I'm Niqua Johnson.....

I stumbled into burlesque as I was looking for different ways to combat my weight, having in the past tried all forms of diets and failed. I decided to try the other side of losing weight, that’s working out, Burlesque appealed to me as it is the art of tease and also because of its elegant and intimate nature.

I love dancing but being able to incorporate these new sensual moves with my dance was just a plus. After embarking on my first course, I realised burlesque had much more to offer than just sensuality and the art of tease but got me to recognise my body(as a big girl) and how to work with what I have. It improved my posture elongating my muscles giving the illusion of a more svelte form and also improved the way I presented myself.....a very good confidence booster.

Burlesquercise is an opportunity to keep fit and also build something (something I have grown to love). This workout is built to do all one could want from a workout and more..... For me it is a physical and most definitely a mental workout.

Our Burlesquercise class will be run by our new teacher Niqua Johnson. This high impact class is for participants looking for variety in their workout routine. The dance workout uses burlesque to strengthen and tone core muscles and LBT area as well as burn calories. May 14th 12:30pm-1:30pm

...ahh, the elections here really disrupted our programming so we decided to put off starting our new classes until it was all over. From May 14th we will be running two classes Beginner's Burlesque and Burlesquercise.

This beginner level class is a great introduction into burlesque in a warm and intimate environment. Taking classic steps and introducing the art of tease, participants should come away with the skills to choreograph their own routine, as we as a chance to perform a burlesque routine at the closing showcase. May 14th 11:30am-12:30pm

Our Burlesquercise class will be run by our new teacher Niqua Johnson who takes no prisoners! This high impact class is for participants looking for variety in their workout routine. The dance workout uses burlesque to strengthen and tone core muscles and LBT area as well as burn calories. May 14th 12:30pm-1:30pm

This beginner level class is a great introduction into burlesque in a warm and intimate environment, taking classic steps and introducing a dance workout.

'Come Play' @ Temple Muse

On Saturday 5th February 2011 Burlesque Princess were invited to perform at Temple Muse's valentines event 'Come Play'.

The otherwise trendy boutique was transformed into Lagos's very own burlesque club for the evening. The Moet bar kept everyone in good spirits, while visitors browsed the new collection and were treated to a performance by yours truely.

With only three days to prepare (and a few hiccups on the day), we were really happy with the whole event and want to say a big thank you to Avinash and Kabir at Temple Muse.

Sorry for the lack of communication of recent we have just been a little swamped preparing our next session of class' and shows leading up to and including the Christmas period here in Lagos. Beginner's Burlesque Kicks off + Important Announcement

On Thursday 2nd September 2010 BP kicked off our Beginner's Burlesque at the Latin Dance Company where we excitedly welcomed our new set of soon to be Burlesque Princess'. The class ran through the essentials on classical Burlesque with a session focussing on the 'Bump and Grind' and the 'Shimmy'.

For the second session participants will be learning how to work with feather fans and boas. Due to the public holiday on Thursday 9th this weeks class has been moved to Wednesday 8th 2010.

Beginners Burlesque
Burlesque classes appeal to women (over 18 years old) and no one is too old to join in the fun. The classes focus on educating (learning about the genre, art, history of burlesque) exercising (toning, mini work-outs), confidence (posing, dressing-up, cabaret-type performances), fun (dance routines, music), networking (meeting a range of other ladies from different age groups) and most of all to instill fun, femininity and confidence in women.

As from Thursday 2nd September BP will be running classes over a six week period. Spaces are limited and therefore must be confirmed prior to September 2nd 2010.

The BP girls passed through London as part of summer holidays and jumped at the chance to shoot some new images for our up coming campaign and body image initiative, you know nothing gets us more excited than donning our gear, getting out are feathers and striking a pose.

Teaming up with plus size model Teiko Dornor (http://teikodornor.blogspot.com/) we styled a 40's-60's shoot which was very sensual and dramatic and cant wait to get the final images from our very talented photographer Jessica Flavin ( we had an amazing team on the day!!!).

We know you're probably as excited as we are so we have put up some behind the scenes footage to wet your appetite....

P.S We have a short video clip of Teiko from backstage, I have tried for hours to put it up with no luck :( However I will keep trying :)

Burlesque is now known as a form of striptease, but originally it didn’t have any stripping at all.

The Beginnings: Britain

Burlesque has its origins in 19th century British music halls, where the term referred to a theatrical entertainment of a satirical comic bent. Beginning in the 1840s, burlesque comedy skits entertained the lower and middle classes by making fun of (or "burlesquing") the operas, plays and social habits of the upper classes. In the 1860s shapely, underdressed women were introduced to keep audiences interested. In the Victorian age, when proper women went to great lengths to hide their physical form beneath bustles, hoops and frills, the idea of young ladies appearing onstage in tights was a great thrill.

1860s: Exported to America

Brit Lydia Thompson was burlesque’s first star and was instrumental in exporting burlesque to America. In the late 1860s her burlesque troupe - the “British Blondes” - became New York's biggest theatrical sensation. Their first hit was Ixion, a mythological spoof that had women in revealing tights playing men's roles. Underdressed women playing sexual aggressors, combining good looks with impertinent comedy – in a production written and managed by a woman, unthinkable! No wonder men and adventurous wives turned out in droves, making Thompson’s troupe the hottest ticket in American show business. Her first New York season grossed over $370,000.

Burlesque Explosion

Lydia’s success launched a US burlesque explosion. Mabel Saintley became America's first native-born burlesque star, when she feminised the popular minstrel show as "Mme. Rintz's Female Minstrels". By now burlesque was a mix of male performer comedy and a chorus girl leg show with song and dance. It was all very tame compared to now – but a bit of leg back then drove audiences wild. In France they had their own take on it with the cancan and the spectacular music halls of the Folies Bergère and the Moulin Rouge.

Burlesque Princess ran its first Burlesques class as part of an intensive series over a six week period in Victoria Island, Lagos on Tuesday 4th May 2010. The class hosted a mix of women with various levels of understanding of the art of burlesque, but all passionate about picking up a few moves either for professional display, or for well personal use ;)

This session was fully booked and we are currently enrolling for the next session due to start week commencing June 20th 2010.

From Pin-Ups and Geisha to the Burlesque Princess

Out of a fascination with the art of Burlesque and also that of the Geisha, Pin-Up's and Geisha was born......

... Taking art and culture as reference points and with an interest in the body image of women of colour, P&G set out on a journey to introduce a brand that was both aesthetic and holistic in nature. Garments designed with the woman in mind, architectured to fit her form and at the same time promote a positive reflection of the wearer. Over time the brand evolved into what is now Burlesque Princess. As we settle into our new identity we hope to take our avid followers along with us for the ride, which will end (or begin, considering which way you look at it) with our first live show later this year!
